Overview

Reducing your financial burden as a homeowner is always going to be important, as owning your own home is a very costly endeavor. From mortgages to renovations, and of course the never-ending list of repairs, home ownership seems to always target your bank account month after month. But when you take the steps to prepare for these expenses by purchasing a home warranty, you’re making the educated decision to stop paying full-price for repairs and instead enjoy peace of mind and coverage with your lowered deductible. Saving you money in the long run, a home warranty like the ones offered by Service Plus makes financial sense as you’ll never be shocked by surprise repairs again.

Many people assume their asset is covered because of their home insurance, but the reality is your insurance only covers destruction and loss in cases of natural disasters, theft, and fire. Average wear and tear on your home systems and appliances are never covered under your home insurance, meaning you’re always forced to pay the repair costs when they come due. Keep reading through this Service Plus review to see how exactly they can help you avoid costly repairs and keep more money in your pocket.

Company Information

Service Plus is a company that offers home warranties for owners, sellers, buyers, and real estate agents. Headquartered out of Philadelphia, PA, they have been in operation since 2016 and have helped thousands of clients keep their homes protected and covered when the need for repairs arises. Utilizing local contractors to assist clients with repairs, Service Plus extends their warranty services to those living within most of the USA, although presently does not have warranties for individuals who live in California, Iowa, Washington, Nevada, or New York.

While they may be a newer company in the world of home warranties, Service Plus offers some of the best comprehensive coverage around and their monthly premiums are in line with what is typically expected. Online reviews show that they have many satisfied customers and that they are easy to work with and provide a well-rounded service.

Expanding beyond just home warranties, Service Plus works closely with those who are buying or selling a home, helping to ensure both the buyer and seller are protected against unnecessary repairs. Featuring no warranty transfer fees, sellers can easily pre-pay for a warranty that the new owner can enjoy, sweetening the deal and alleviating any concerns about the appliances and major home systems.

Service Plus doesn’t require you to have a home inspection before purchasing your warranty, nor do they require you to submit maintenance records. In addition, there is no age limit for appliances or homes, meaning if you own an older home you are still eligible for coverage. All terms and conditions are neatly laid out before you make your final purchase for a warranty, and the team at Service Plus is always available to answer any questions you may have.

Coverage & Add-Ons

If you’re considering getting a home warranty then the first thing you are going to want to know about is what you’re covered against. There is no point buying something you can’t ever really use, so the coverage options are something you want to genuinely look over and consider before making that final decision.

Service Plus offers two main plan options to choose from which will give you different levels of coverage and protect various systems and appliances. In addition, they also offer a list of add-ons that you are welcome to include on top of your standard plan for additional fees and charges. As for what the plan options cover, the chart below lays out in detail what to expect.

Refirgeratorn/aIncluded
Washer & Dryern/aIncluded

For the most part the two plans are fairly similar with the main difference being that the Platinum option includes some of the most commonly used appliances and systems. The washer and dryer, as well as the fridge, are likely used daily in your home meaning they undergo the most wear and tear over time. In addition, the air conditioning and heating systems can be very expensive to repair yourself, so that is another selling point for the Platinum plan.

There are only the two main plans to choose from but if you want to add on additional coverage for other items and systems you are welcome to do so. Service Plus has an add-on menu that includes the following:

  • Pool & Spa
  • Additional Spa
  • Limited Roof Leak
  • Central Vacuum
  • Sump Pump
  • Well Pump
  • Septic System
  • Septic Plumbing
  • Second Refrigerator
  • Stand Alone Freezer
  • Water Softener
  • Refrigerator Ice Maker
  • Free Standing Ice Maker
  • Additional A/C System
  • Additional Heating System
  • Additional Water Heater
  • Additional Garage Door Opener

Exclusions & Caps

Just as vital as what is covered, it is equally important to know what you aren’t covered against as well as what may void your warranty. Given how comprehensive the plans offered by Service Plus are there isn’t much left out, but if something isn’t listed as part of your plan then that automatically is excluded from service calls and covered repairs.

There are some minor exclusions that are related to the items covered, in particular the air conditioning unit, the fridge, and the whirlpool bathtub. Air conditioners are only applicable for coverage up to a 5-ton capacity and there is no reimbursement or coverage for their filters, water towers, humidifiers, or window units. With refrigerators, you are only covered if that fridge is located in the kitchen and there is no coverage for hinges, racks, shelves, drawers, or gaskets.

Exclusions also apply in other cases and you may actually void your warranty if you breach certain aspects of your contract. Additional exclusions that apply to your Service Plus warranty include not providing coverage for:

  • Items or systems with pre-existing problems whether known or unknown
  • Malfunction caused by lack of maintenance or abuse
  • Cosmetic defects
  • Items that have been deemed defective
  • Any routine maintenance or care

Beyond exclusions, there are also caps and limits that apply to your claims which you will want to take note of so that you don’t exceed them during a given period of time. What’s nice about Service Plus is that they do not limit how many claims you are able to make, and they only have caps on annual payout amounts. How much you are capped at will depend on your contract, so to find out more you should contact them directly and speak with a representative.

Service Calls & Claims

Coverage for your home appliances and systems will begin 30 days after you sign your contract. During the first 30 days you will not be eligible to make any claims, so if something does break then you are presently responsible for it. However, after your 30 day waiting period is up you are welcome to contact the Service Plus claim department by phone or via your online account in order to get assistance with a repair.

To ensure you get assistance when you need it, Service Plus uses local contractors that have all been vetted by the company. Licensed and insured, the technicians that come to your home are monitored and graded for quality assurance and are known for their high-quality work and performance.

Technicians who come into your home will attempt to repair the appliance or system on site, but occasionally there will be instances where that simply isn’t possible. In the case where a repair cannot be done, Service Plus will replace the unit for you based on the conditions laid out in our contract.

Clients are able to reach out any time of day or night in order to request assistance. Service Plus is always available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and they are not closed for holidays. This means you have protection 365 days of the year, and you never have to worry about being without your dishwasher or air conditioning.

Service Plus Cost

Pricing for the plans that Service Plus offers are subject to certain conditions and there are various factors that go into determining how much you pay each year. For example, those who live in certain states may pay more based on the fact that technicians are more expensive in those areas. Likewise, those who own a larger home will often pay more than those with a very small home as there is more square footage where systems can fail.

To help keep things easy to understand, Service Plus offers free quotes to anyone who is interested in purchasing a home warranty through them. The free quote is the only way to know for sure how much you are going to be spending in premiums, and it is also a great time to ask any additional questions you may have.

Typically the yearly cost for a home warranty through Service Plus will fall somewhere in the $299 to $499 range, meaning your monthly premiums would be around $25 – $42. Again, this is only a generalized range, and does not mean your actual cost will match.

As for their service call fees, there is no flat rate and how much you pay will depend on the terms and conditions laid out in your plan. The starting rate for service calls is around $45, but again, this is only a generalized average and it may be different for your plan. To know for sure, simply reach out to a representative or proceed with the online quote process and find out within minutes.
