Overview
Buying a new mattress is always an investment, but when you spend a third of your lifetime laying on it then it’s definitely worth spending the time and money to select the right one. Whether you prefer a soft, cloud-like experience or want a firm and supportive bed, choosing that perfect mattress is a very personal, and difficult decision, and one that many people find to be stressful and overwhelming. Sales people at the stores can be overly pushy and you may feel awkward testing them out in public, so what’s the best way to go about finding that ideal mattress that makes all of your dreams come true?
Online mattress retailers like Helix offer a revolutionary way of shopping for a mattress, and their bed-in-a-box shipments deliver high-quality beds at a fraction of the price you would pay in store. Mattress Options
One common complaint that many customers tend to have when purchasing a bed-in-a-box from online retailers is that there tends to be a lack of selection from each company. Generally focusing on one or two key models, it’s more of a “you get what you get” than it is a personalized shopping experience. Helix has taken note of this issue and has crafted an expanded line of mattress models that range in firmness, design, and construction so that you can ultimately find the ideal mattress for you. But, with so many options available, you may find it difficult to pinpoint exactly which one meets your needs.
To help you decide, Helix has created an online sleep-type quiz that is completely free and takes only a few minutes to complete. By answering some questions about who sleeps in the bed and what they prefer, Helix will then be able to match you to the right model for you. In total, Helix has designed 7 core models, as well as some luxury versions of each one.
Each of the 7 mattresses are very specific in what they are intended for, and Helix has worked hard to design models that cater to certain firmness levels as well as preferred sleep positions. Since body shape and size can affect how a mattress feels and performs, the majority of the models are based around an average size of 120lbs to 220lbs. Those who are heavier, however, will enjoy the Helix Plus, a mattress specifically designed to be more supportive and comfortable for individuals over 220lbs, something not offered by many other brands.
Feel | Sleep Position | Design | |
---|---|---|---|
Sunset | Soft | Side | Pressure Relief |
Moonlight | Soft | Back & Stomach | Body Contouring |
Midnight | Medium | Side | Pressure Relief |
Dusk | Medium | Back & Stomach | Body Contouring |
Twilight | Firm | Side | Pressure Relief |
Dawn | Firm | Back & Stomach | Body Contouring |
Plus | Medium | Plus Size | Maximum Support |

Luxe Models
If 7 core models wasn’t enough, Helix has also introduced luxury versions of many which they call their Luxe line. The Luxe mattresses are similar in design and construction to their standard counterparts, however, they feature a number of upgrades that create a more luxurious and comfortable experience.
One of the first differences you will notice with the Luxe models is that they sport a unique Tencel cover that is much more breathable than the standard cover found on the other Helix models. Crafted using environmentally friendly Tencel fibers, this upgraded cover does an amazing job of wicking away moisture so that you remain cool throughout the night. Foam mattresses do tend to sleep hotter than innersprings, so having intentional cooling features means a much more comfortable sleep, especially in the summer, and can prevent you from waking up sweaty in the morning.
Another noticeable upgrade is a premium quilted pillow top that will make you feel like you’re sleeping in a 5-star hotel every night. Thicker than a standard cover, this pillow top design adds that extra bit of cushioning so you get better body contouring properties with your mattress. Not only that, but you won’t need to ever purchase a mattress topper as this pillow top is more than enough for that extra, luxurious boost.
Last but certainly not least in the line of added features for Luxe models is the new and improved zone support. Targeting your lumbar region specifically, these coils provide a softer feel where your shoulders rest while increasing the firmness under your hips. Perfectly cradling your body, the zoned coils ensure your spine is correctly aligned throughout the night and helps reduce any back pain or pressure that you may have otherwise had.
Design & Construction
All of the mattresses offered by Helix are hybrids, meaning they are made from a combination of foam and innerspring coils. Hybrid mattresses have been increasing in popularity thanks to their ability to provide the best of both worlds: the comfort and contouring of memory foam and the support and pressure relief of coils. While they may be a bit more expensive than all foam or all coil models, the slight increase in price offers exceptional value and you truly get a mattress that is genuinely supportive and comfortable.
For the standard models, every mattress is 12” in height and is crafted using 4” of foam and 8” of coils. The differences between the models isn’t found within the coils, which are all standard, but instead is due to the 4 foams used: memory plus foam, polyurethane foam, Helix dynamic foam, and DuraDense foam. Which of the 4 are used, and the order in which they are placed, will ultimately determine the firmness, ideal sleep position, and type of targeted support that the mattress offers.
Less firm models such as the Sunset use memory plus foam for the comfort layer, a much softer and enveloping foam that relieves pressure while making you feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud. As for the transitional layer, the Sunset, and its other soft Sibling the Moonlight, rely on Helix’s proprietary dynamic foam which is a latex-foam hybrid alternative and offers a unique ergonomic support that is more comfortable than other model’s transitional layers.
If you enjoy a medium-firm mattress then the Midnight is going to suit you best and it’s made using the same memory plus foam comfort layer as the Sunset. However, the big difference with the Midnight can be found in the transitional layer where you will encounter a high-grade polyfoam that is significantly firmer and more supportive than the dynamic foam found in the less firm models. The high-grade polyfoam is also the same transitional layer for the firmest models, the Twilight and Dawn, although those achieve extra firmness by opting for comfort layers made from options such as the Helix dynamic foam.
Comfort | Transition | Base | |
---|---|---|---|
Sunset | Memory Plus Foam | Helix Dynamic Foam | DuraDense Foam |
Moonlight | Helix Dynamic Foam | Helix Dynamic Foam | DuraDense Foam |
Midnight | Memory Plus Foam | High-Grade Polyfoam | DuraDense Foam |
Dusk | Helix Dynamic Foam | Memory Plus Foam | DuraDense Foam |
Twilight | Memory Plus Foam | High-Grade Polyfoam | DuraDense Foam |
Dawn | Helix Dynamic Foam | High-Grade Polyfoam | DuraDense Foam |
Plus | Ultra Dense Memory Foam & Helix Dynamic Foam | Firm Memory Foam | DuraDense Foam |

Once you have your mattress set-up and ready to go, you will get to enjoy a 100-night sleep trial in order to ensure you are happy with your purchase. Purchasing something like a mattress online without trying it first can be intimidating, which is why the sleep trial is so great. Risk-free, you can test out the model in your own home and see how it holds up after a couple of months. Unhappy by the end of it, simply send your mattress back and Helix will refund you for the purchase.
Helix Mattress Cost
One thing to keep in mind when looking at Helix’s mattresses is that every model is a hybrid so it will ultimately be a bit more expensive than many of the all-foam mattresses that other brands are selling. With that said, these hybrids are still much more affordable than the ones you would typically find in a traditional brick and mortar shop, and with the included delivery cost and 100-night sleep trial you are getting amazing value packaged into one, convenient box.
Below you will find a breakdown of all the available models and their relevant pricing information. To keep things simple, Helix prices all models exactly the same, with the only difference being between the sizes, as well as the Luxe models costing a bit more. All prices listed are in USD and are subject to change. Helix frequently offers promotions and sales which may mean extra savings for you.
